Air Intake Kit Questions

I know this is a highly debatable item to many, but I am looking at adding an air intake to my 2003 Lightning. I have one that seems like a winner, but I have a few questions.

Does the factory maf sensor work or will I need to upgrade that also?
Do I need to get a performance chip?
Do I need to do anything to the throttle bodies?
Anything else that I might be overlooking or that should be done when adding the air intake?

Thanks in advance for your help, everyone on here seems so eager to help out and I greatly appreciate your input.

My 2 cents:

1. Your stock MAF will work with an after market intake with no problem.
2. You do not "need" a chip/tune to add an after market intake but you will "want" it as it makes a big difference in performance (Marv can help you with this ).
3. Your stock throttle body does not need any modification.
4. The only other advice is to stay away from an enclosed intake like the Volant. It is not much better than stock and restrictive. An large open filter that is somewhat shielded will be just fine.

What intake were you thinking about?

Any progress on your front end noises?

Let us know how things come out.

I think I am going with the Secret Weapon by Weapon R. It is supposed to let more air in than a K&N. I am not tied to it, so if you have any suggestions please send them my way. It seems kind of hard to find one that fits the Lightnings.

I have not done anything with my noise problem, it has been raining so much up here that the roads are full of tree debris I don't even want to take it out of the garage and I don't drive it in the rain. I looked around by the back side of the tire and noticed a cylindrical "bump stop" that is about 3/4" round and about an inch long. Is that what I should put some grease on? Just regular grease or should I get something special?

All of this damn rain is beging to get under my skin, tonight at WIR they have their high school drags/test and tune and I wanted to take my truck to see what it does before I put any mods on it. It looks like that won't be happening and I think they only have one more of these scheduled for this summer.

I am not familiar with the Weapon R Secret Weapon. I would suggest something along these lines in no particular order:

http://www.johnnylightningperf.com/s...=33&cPath=2_16
http://www.johnnylightningperf.com/s...=32&cPath=2_16
http://www.teamjdm.com/shop/product_...d=7&cPath=11_4
http://www.lightningforceperformance...d_Air_Kit.html

Yes, you found the steering stop. Just put a gob of regular grease on that to stop the noise at full turn.

Never heard of the weapon R Secret Weapon, but any open filter will work just fine; besides you'll love the sound of your S/C with an open air filter.

Lightning Rodder is a good site, you want to learn more about Lightnings start there. SVTP has a section for Lightnings also.
