I forgot about this post. I was talking to Steve at the last Shop Talk and he was saying he just bought a Pyrotect SA2000 helmet for $99. I cannot remember all the details but I think it was ebay.
STEVE, ARE YOU OUT THERE?
Maybe Terry or Bruce can add something about off-brands. My opinion is that as long as the helmet is Snell rated, it should be just as good as any other Snell rated helmet, off-brand or not.

The two most important considerations when purchasing a helmet are the Snell Rating (there are several) and fitting.
Only helmets with a "Snell SA 95" rating or better are allowed at SVTOA On Track events. If your buying a new helmet the rating should be "SA 2000". Don't do what I did and buy a helmet with a "Snell M" rating. "M" is for motorcycle and such helmets are not tested for the special requirements unique to auto events and they are not flame resistant.
What size and shape is your head? Helmets like shoes fit differently. Those that are too big will change orientation (think obscured vision) or if to small (think of a vise) give you a headache. Another consideration is the use of eye wear. Not all track events are held on overcast days so even if you don't wear corrective lenses you may want wear sun glasses.
As the Autobahn is a National SVTOA On Track event “loaner helmets” will be available in limited numbers (not the best fit and like bowling shoes they……….) The only local seller of helmets I know of is Pegasus Auto Racing in New Berlin. Pegasus offers a variety of helmet styles and sizes from a number of different manufacturers. All of the helmets offered carry the "Snell SA 2000" rating and Pegasus provides the opportunity to find a proper fit. If you can wait Pegasus will be at the Ice Breaker on May 14th and will have helmets available in various styles and sizes.

Thanks for the help. I have a small head and a good fit is important. I did go to Pegesus several weeks ago and tried on some helmets. The size I thought would fit was way to large. Also different manafactures sizes are not the same.I had to order one in my size. Pegesus was very good about getting the correct helmet for me. I am getting a Simpson open face.

As in the past, SVTOA has a limited number of helmets available for those of you who do not currently have your own. However, please be aware that SVTOA now has a new rental policy. No immediate action is necessary to secure your rental helmet; registration for SVTOA's helmets will be completed on site during event registration. All proceeds from this new rental policy will go directly towards the purchase of replacement helmets for future On Track Events.
Helmet Rental Charges: $15.00 per day/ $20.00 per weekend - US
$18.00 per day/ $24.00 per weekend - Canada
Helmet rental will be available at registration and will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Helmet rental charges must be paid at the time of rental in the form of cash, check or money order - no credit cards please.
Upon rental, participants will receive a specific COLORED wristband depending on rental type - weekend vs. one day rental.
Participants must supply a driver's license to the helmet check-out staff to get a helmet. Helmets should be rented prior to the participant's run group. Helmets are shared, so prompt return of the helmet to the check-out table immediately following your drive session is imperative in order to get the next renter out on track.
Once the helmet is returned, renters will receive their license back. This process is repeated for each drive session. *
For more information regarding helmets and minimum safety requirements, please review the Rules and Regulations document located on the events page of SVTOA.com.
