I WAS JUST CURIOUS WHAT THE BIGGEST SIZE TIRE I CAN GO UP TO WITH THE STOCK 2001 COBRA WHEELS. I WAS LOOKING INTO 275/40/17. I HAD THE TIRE SHOP TELL ME THAT THIS SIZE WOULD WORK FINE , JUST THOUGHT I WOULD ASK YOU GUYS IF YOU AGREE OR DISAGREE?

You can always go to the Tire Rack web site and check out the tire sizes and approved rim widths there. They have a link to "specs" for each tire that lists the recommended rim sizes from the manufacturer.
I don't know the answer to your question, but you should be able to find it at the Tire Rack site!

The stock wheels on an 01 are 17x8. All the 03-04's use a 17x9. They have a 275/40/17 stock. Thats too big for a 17x8. It may fit on the rim, but it won't sit flat on the road. That can cause wandering and wear problems. I would use a 255/40/17. There wider, but the lower profile works out to almost the same size height wise as the stock 245/45/17. I had this setup on my 94 GT and it was great.Let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks!!! Marv Z

Also, the sidewall will tend to roll more than it should under hard cornering because there is not enough rim there to support it. That's a real bad thing if you AX the car.
