I just purchased rear gears for my 98 Cobra. I have a trusted friend who owns a repair shop who is doing the install. He found the carrier bearing and pinion bearing badly pitted. The car has less than 4000 miles on it. Up till the gear change it was factory stock. Not that this is a big expense but I wanted to know if anyone else has seen this?

When Marv installed 410 gears in my 99 Cobra, we discovered the same thing. The car had about 15,000 miles on it.

Since you very seldom hear of rear end failures in stock Mustangs with 8.8 rears, it makes one wonder if pitting is really a "problem". Nonetheless, I spent the dollars and had new bearings installed. This cost almost as much as the gear set!

Yep, same here when I had my 4.30's installed.

Thanks for the replies. I feel a little better about the whole deal. Didn't cost me near as much as the gears though.

I have done many rear end repairs on Ford 8.8 and 9 inch axles. It is not a normal problem with Ford rear axles. It could be caused by contamenation, metal chips, water, etc in the lube. It could also be caused by lack of lube.About 1999 or so Ford started using synthetic 70/140 axle lube,a much better lube.:)
