I was wondering if the 2000 Cobra "R" IRS requires a lubricant "modifier" additive?
Also, are there other alternatives for gear lube such as Royal Purple, Amsoil, Red Line or the like?
Thanks for the help!

Bruce. All Ford rear axles are filled 70-140 wt. synthetic gear lube.It allso should have the fricton additive in it, so you need not change the gear lube, you have the best. Curt:beer:

Check out Amsoil Gear Lubes at: www.amsoil.com
Amsoil doesn't need any modifiers added.
They should have what u are looking for. U can order from that site too. If u use my Customer#66180 & register as a Prefered Customer u can buy at near dealer cost. I have used Amsoil for over 25 yrs. now with no problems. I will be putting in the gear lubes in our '03 Cobra this spring, both the rear end & the tranny. Amsoil is in the engine already.

Thanks for the replies guys. What I meant by the modifier is for the posi-traction. Are you saying the Ford 70-140 synthetic has the posi friction modifier in it? I wouldn't think that a standard, off the shelf 70-140 synthetic would have the posi-traction modifier in it?
The reason I ask is I'm dropping the rear end and installing a diff cooler and I don't want to save/reuse the original lube. After all, it has 600 miles on it already. ;)

Check out Amsoils website 1st. They have a phone # listed & I think u can email questions like that to ask tech. info but I am sure that AMSOIL needs no modifiers, not sure about other synthetics though. I have used AMSOIL for over 24 yrs. & sell it also so I can hook u up with discount prices.

After my second event and putting up with lots of strange noises from my IRS diff, I discovered there is a friction modifier additive required for the positraction IRS. It is not in the Ford differential lube. It is part number M2C118A and can be purchased at the Ford parts counter. It comes in a Motorcraft 4 oz bottle and only 2oz are required for a normal stock diff set-up. Seeing I have a pump, heat exchanger and all the related lines I'll probably just dump the whole 4oz container in the system. I hope that quiets the Gremlins in there!!
Just thought I would share this with everybody!

When Marv changed gears in my 99, I know that he installed the modifier. And, all Cobra have Traction Lock.

I know the Lightnings need the modifier in their diff as well. It's to help the clutch packs I believe.
